GEO & AI Search — Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about GEO, AI citations, and how we work together.

Basics: what GEO is

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is the practice of making your content likely to be cited and recommended by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. Instead of optimizing for a ranked list of links, you optimize to be the source the AI quotes in its answer.

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO aims to rank your page in a list of links; GEO aims to get your content quoted inside an AI-generated answer. They overlap, but GEO puts more weight on direct answers, structure, and being machine-readable.

Is GEO the same as AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

Largely yes — the terms are often used interchangeably. Both focus on becoming the answer an AI assistant gives, rather than a link a user clicks.

Is GEO a real, proven thing or just hype?

It's grounded in real research and platform behavior. An academic paper coined the term in 2023, and studies of hundreds of millions of AI citations show consistent patterns. It's early, but not vapor.

Do I need GEO if I already do SEO?

Increasingly, yes. More people now ask AI assistants instead of scrolling Google. Good SEO helps, but it doesn't guarantee you're the source the AI quotes.

How AI chooses sources

How do AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity choose which sources to cite?

When they use live search, they run sub-queries, pull a handful of candidate pages, and quote the few with the clearest, most trustworthy answer to that exact question. They favor extractable answers, recognizable authors, and fresh content.

Do AI crawlers read JavaScript?

Mostly no. Crawlers like GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot read the raw HTML and generally don't run JavaScript, so content that only appears after JS can be invisible to them.

How important is content freshness?

Very. AI-cited pages are on average about 25% more recently updated than the organic top ten, and ChatGPT especially leans toward recently updated pages.

Do backlinks still matter for AI visibility?

Less than you'd think. Brand mentions on trusted sites correlate with AI visibility about three times more strongly than raw backlinks — being talked about matters more than being linked to.

Does content length affect whether I get cited?

No. The correlation between word count and citation is about 0.04 — effectively zero. A short, dense answer beats a long, padded one.

Why do Reddit and Wikipedia get cited so often?

They carry high trust and real, first-hand information. Reddit is the single most-cited domain across major AI engines, and a small set of top domains accounts for most AI citations.

Can I get cited without ranking on page one of Google?

Yes. The overlap between Google's top ten and AI citations has dropped sharply, so a clear, well-structured answer can be quoted even when it isn't ranking first.

Why you might not be showing up

Why isn't my website showing up in ChatGPT answers?

Common reasons: your content is rendered by JavaScript (crawlers see an empty page), it doesn't answer questions directly, it lacks schema and structure, or it's stale. Fixing those is what GEO does.

My site is beautiful but built as a JavaScript app. Is that a problem?

Often, yes. If the text only loads after JavaScript runs, AI crawlers may see nothing. You need server-side rendering or prerendering so the content is in the raw HTML.

I have great content but no citations. What's wrong?

Usually it's not the ideas — it's the packaging. If the answer is buried below an intro, unstructured, or missing data and schema, AI can't easily extract and trust it.

Does GEO work for a personal brand, not just a company?

Yes — that's a core focus. A person can be an entity AI recognizes and recommends, through a consistent identity, author markup, and quotable content.

Services and process

What is an AI Authority Audit and what do I get?

It's a structured diagnosis of how visible and quotable you are in AI today, plus a prioritized list of fixes. You get a clear starting point, not a vague score.

How do we work together?

It depends on the service: a one-off audit, a consulting roadmap, ongoing retainer work, or a visibility mapping. We start by looking at how AI sees you now, then act on the biggest gaps first.

Which AI engines do you optimize for?

The major ones people actually use: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini, with attention to Claude. The core principles overlap across all of them.

Do you write the content, or just advise?

Both are possible. Consulting gives you the strategy and structure; a retainer includes ongoing content and maintenance. We agree on scope up front.

Do you guarantee I'll be cited by ChatGPT?

No honest consultant can guarantee a specific AI output — the engines change weekly. What I guarantee is a sound method, current knowledge, and transparent work aimed squarely at citation.

You've been in GEO for 9 months — why should I trust you?

Because GEO is a new field — the founding research is from late 2023, so there are no decade-long veterans. What matters is depth right now, and honesty. My guides and articles show the thinking.

Do you have case studies?

Not yet — I'm early and transparent about it. Instead of inflated claims, I offer a clear method, current data, and founding-client terms for the first projects.

Results, timing, and technical

How long does it take to start appearing in AI answers?

It varies. Technical fixes (crawlability, schema) can take effect within weeks; building topical authority and mentions takes longer. Anyone promising a fixed timeline is guessing.

How do we measure success?

By testing your target queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini and tracking whether you're mentioned or cited — plus growth in AI-referred traffic over time.

Will GEO also help my normal Google rankings?

Often yes. The same fundamentals — clear answers, semantic HTML, schema, freshness, authority — help both classic search and AI citations.

What is llms.txt and do I need it?

It's a plain-text file that points AI systems to your most important pages. It's an emerging standard, low-effort to add, and it helps AI understand your best content.

Do I need to allow AI bots in robots.txt?

Yes, if you want to be cited. Explicitly allow crawlers like GPTBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot; blocking them makes you invisible to those systems.

Is it risky to let AI crawlers use my content?

It's a trade-off. Allowing them is how you get cited and recommended; blocking them removes you from AI answers. For visibility-focused brands, allowing is usually the right call.

How is GEO different from just posting on social media?

Social builds reach with humans; GEO builds presence inside AI answers, which increasingly shape decisions. They complement each other — mentions on trusted platforms actually feed your AI visibility.
